As we begin 2019, we at Home Rule have decided that, after 20 wonderful and fulfilling years, it is now time for us to pursue new opportunities and adventures. Home Rule will be closing on March 31, 2019.
For 20 years, our customers have supported and delighted us, and we are grateful for your loyalty and the many friendships we have made over the years. Additionally we are grateful to all of our many dedicated team members, 50 of you, who worked with us over the years and helped make Home Rule the friendly, vibrant and diverse store that it became.
We have diligently worked to be the best small neighborhood store we could be. In doing so we
nourished a community of neighbors, friends, and colleagues and became a unique and significant
presence in Washington DC’s retail landscape.
We are proud of all of our accomplishments. As one of the first new businesses to renovate a building on 14th Street NW that was still derelict from the riots of 1968, we opened in September 1999 with big dreams. With early attention from the Washington Post Food and Home sections, we gained city-wide notoriety for functional and fun products that were difficult to find elsewhere. More press and product features followed in publications as varied as New York Times Style, Country Home, Bon Appetit, Town and Country, Lucky, Taste of the South and countless travel guides. For eight of our 20 years, Home Rule ranked as the Reader’s Choice Best Home Goods Store in City Paper’s Best of DC poll.
In an effort to provide ourselves with the appropriate cash flow for the slow late-summer season, we created Dog Days, a neighborhood sidewalk sale, in August 2000. Dog Days gave us the opportunity to get to know our fellow business owners better and became a catalyst for close knit professional collaboration. Dog Days has grown every year since and is now one of the largest community events in the mid-city 14th Street area.
Home Rule has also been known city wide for its creative and beautiful window displays. Aware of how much a shop window contributes to a more engaging and attractive streetscape, Home Rule invested heavily in the resources needed to create an ever changing vignette to delight passersby. For a look through photos of some of the windows, view local photographer Elvert Barnes’ Flickr feed for Home Rule.
It was a truly exciting 20 years. We will always remember how transformative Home Rule has been for ourselves, our team and the city around us.
Home Rule will continue to operate through Sunday, March 31st 2019 with closeout sales beginning
Monday, March 4th. Follow us on social media for more details. We’d love to have you stop in to say
farewell and grab a few items on sale.
It’s always sad to say goodbye, but we’re also excited for the future and the new opportunities coming
Thank you for all of your support and friendship over the past 20 years.
We couldn’t have done it without you.
Grace, Link and Rod
